Family Grave Schleiermacher
Sculptor: Fritz Schaper, after an original by Christian Daniel Rauch
Cemetery Dreifaltigkeit II (Trinity II), Abt. B-OA-118
Right in the center of the plot paved with flagstones stands the cippus for the theologian and philosopher Friedrich Daniel Schleiermacher on a three-step pedestal made from red granite. The
stele itself is made from marble. Its top is a gable decorated with acroteria. The faces of the gable have ornaments of palmette reliefs.
The bust of Schleiermacher in a pastor´s robe is placed in a circular niche in the upper half of the
cippus. It was sculpted by Fritz Schaper after an original by Christian Daniel Rauch.. The room inside the niche below the bust is filled by an angel´s head, whose wings seem to bear the bust.
The name, titles, birth and death date as well as a verse from the bible "Remember your teachers, who taught you the word of God. To this end look and follow their faith." Ebr. 13,7 are carved in gilded letters into the stone below the niche.
On the right side of this dominating gravestone lie, one behind the other, two small and simple slabs for Henriette and Nathanael Schleiermacher. Both are made from marble, their surfaces weathered.
The grave-site is enclosed on all four sides by simple iron railings. They consist of rectangles, which enclose smaller rectangles. Both are connected by diagonal ribbons meeting in the middle. The fluted iron posts are structured by frieze-like ribbons decorated with blossoms. Their tops are iron pine cones.
